Kristy Kristinek, MFA
LBKHAUS has been a dream for many years. After making the decision to leave my public artist residency, I was still craving the interactive environment outside of my studio space.
My creative process started to focus more and more on collaboration so the need for a space to accomplish my goals became more prevalent. Thus, LBKHAUS was born!
I wanted to create a space for my audience to become immersed in the process of collaborative elements such as music, movement and live painting.
My Story
I come from a background of utilizing dance and art as a way of communicating. From a very young age I decided that art was going to be my path.
After 12+ years of classical ballet it was time to decide where I wanted to go to college. Art was always my outlet, drawing animals, landscapes, my family members, whatever inspired me. I love drawing and painting in both oil and acrylic. I always had art supplies around waiting to be used.
In 2008 I moved to Lubbock, TX to start my undergraduate career in Studio Art at Texas Tech University. At this time I was still deciding where my professional career as an artist would take me. I fell in love with my professors and knew that college level teaching was my calling.
Then, in 2012 after completing my BFA in Studio Art, I continued on with my masters at Texas Tech University and in 2015, graduated with my MFA in Painting and a secondary in Printmaking.
For my thesis exhibition I collaborated with Flatlands Dance Theatre, this was the beginning of my collaborative artistic career. After graduation I taught at both Texas Tech and Lubbock Christian University as a part time Studio Instructor. I then accepted a position at South Plains College where I spent 7 years as an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts & Gallery Director. In 2024 I decided to resign from South Plains College and continue my academic career teaching at Texas Tech University where I now teach foundational Drawing Studios.
In 2017 I accepted an artist in residence at CASP, Charles Adams Studio Project. Here I would spend the next 6 years inviting my audience to experience my process and expand on what it meant to be a performance artist. I now found a way to bridge the gap between my ballet background and my current position as a painter.
From here I would carve out more time balancing my research and my academic commitments. I was introduced to Dr. Alice Anne Light from the music department at Texas Tech in 2021 and have been on a collaborative journey with her through opera and live performance of Cecil Price Walden, traveling to Ole Miss University, Kansas City, and University of North Florida. I have also worked alongside Flatlands Dance Theatre in multiple opportunities all while showcasing my paintings in various galleries and alternative spaces locally and nationally.
In January of 2024 I decided to open LBKHAUS. I had outgrown my public studio space and decided that Lubbock needed an intimate collaborative venue for artists, dancers, musicians, and creatives alike to come together and provide a unique collective atmosphere for my audiences.
LBKHAUS now showcases 7 abstract artists, has hosted multiple live art-in-motion events, and also hosted academic recitals and vocal performances.
My hope is that my story can inspire and ignite others to do the same! We are stronger in numbers and by working together we can create something great.
